Text File (.TXT) Simple file format containing plain text with very little formatting information. Universally openable.

The busy bees at fileminx towers are (as we speak) belting out not just one, but two huge updates to the site.

First of all we are adding support for document conversion for loads of different common Office-type files, such as PDF, Word Documents, text files, Open Document Format, Microsoft Works, Word Perfect and many more!

Secondly, we are revamping the interface a tad to make it easier to get to the conversion format you need even faster. Also, it’s going to be a tad prettier… Well we think so at least.

fileminx towers, yesterday

The overworked souls at fileminx towers have pressed their blistered noses to the grindstone once more and conjured up yet more brilliant file converting wizardry. They sound similar, but what exactly are DivX and Xvid?

DivX is a video codec created by DivX Inc based on MPEG-4. It has grown in popularity in recent years for sending long videos over the internet due to its advertised high compression ratio. They state that DVD-quality video and audio can be compressed typically 7-10 times further than standard DVD (MPEG-2) technology. Being unbiased sorts at fileminx, we couldn’t possibly comment but it has been noticed during testing that file sizes for divx do tend to be a tad smaller than similar formats. Video with the DivX codec can only be played using the DivX player or plugin.

Xvid on the other hand (or possibly the same hand depending on the way you look at it) is basically like an open source version of DivX. Indeed, “Xvid” is “DivX” spelled backwards – demonstrating the two offerings’ similar roots. Again based on MPEG-4 encoding, Xvid advocates state very high compression ratios while maintaining high quality video. Xvid encoded video requires a plugin or third party app to play. But bizarrely, due to patent concerns, you cannot download such a plugin directly from the Xvid website.

The busy bees at fileminx towers have been beavering away with the new version and among many other delights includes conversion for a whole range of image formats including:
BMP, GIF, ICO, JPEG, JPG, PCX, PIC, PICT, PNG, PSD, SUN, TGA, TIF, TIFF and WMF.

So if you’re having problems with that tricky PSD (Photoshop) image that someone mailed to you because you don’t have Photoshop, then you can whack it into fileminx and it will give it back as something more useful, like a JPEG. Brilliant!

Music files seem to be particularly popular at the moment with a large number of visitors to the site doing M4A to MP3 conversion. Obviously there are a lot of folk out there wanting to play iTunes tracks on something other than iPods!
